GSDCGKC 2017 Annual Specialty Show
The German Shepherd Dog Club of Greater Kansas City Specialties returned back to Kansas City to our new show site at Smith Fork Park next to beautiful Smithville Lake, one of Kansas Cities favorite recreational areas.
Brett with the Smithville Park & Recreation Department made sure that the show grounds and Shelter house were in tip top order and could not have been nicer and more accommodating to our requests and needs.
We plan on having a great future relationship with Brett and Parks & Recreation as this will be our annual show site, including the 2018 Midwest Futurity/Maturity and our Specialties next June.
Mike Kennedy pressured washed and repainted the lettering, rims and fenders on the Club trailer making it presentable for the show. Great job, Mike!!
The event was judged by Mr. Bob Slay on Saturday morning, Mr. Jamie Hubbard on Saturday afternoon, and Mr. Jack Kilgore on Sunday.
The following businesses donated items for the show: Smithville Price Chopper, Upco, Raintree Animal Health, Three Dog Bakery, Brookside Barkery & Bath, and Go Pet Go.
The club sponsored a fried chicken dinner after the Saturday show. A large crowd attended both the dinner and the show. Thanks to all of the members that donated desserts for the dinner.
After dinner, members of the National Police Canine Association (NPCA) representing the North Central Region provided a canine demonstration for the crowd.
Officer Scott Baker with the North Kansas City Police department discussed the different temperaments of the individual canine dogs. His canine partner, Stryker is family friendly. Officer Nelson from the Kansas City Missouri Police department handles his canine named Danger

Officer Hubbell demonstrated the remote release on the patrol car allowing his dog to quickly exit the patrol car unassisted.
Officer Nelson played the role of a “bad guy” donning the bite suit for the demonstration. Officer Hubbell sent his dog Ty out to apprehend the bad guy. Officer Hubbell demonstrated an off leash apprehension.

EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT!!!!
Best of Breeds, Majors, Major Reserves, Awesome Junior Handling, Amazing Professionalism and Handling, Select's (perhaps even a new Grand Championship) A Reserve Junior handling award, police demonstrations, an amazing dinner, amazing sportsmanship, a small club taking on a BIG job, dogs not normally shown out for fun and support! fun for even the littlest fur kids in attendance. AN AMAZING LAST MINUTE PHOTOGRAPHER Summer Cole who not only took class pictures but fun kid and movement pictures, What a natural dog person so patience and accommodating (I for one can't wait to see my puppy baby Doc's pictures and my friends Hottie's pics:) This club reminds me of the little engine that could and DID!
Way to go to all the club members from the unsung hero's hobbling on sore muscles and knees to round up people for the Police Demonstration, to the amazing dinner preparations and the husbands that helped steady tents that threatened to blow away,
As I reflect, I always ask myself (especially since I have retired from specialty handling) why do we all suffer through sunburns, meltdowns, and all the frustrations that sometimes come in clubs trying to put on venues for exhibitor's? The answer I circle back to is the dogs, this amazing breed that we are lucky enough to be a part of. At times, it can bring out the best in us and the worst in us, but at the end of the day it's simply wanting the best for our dogs, and being competitive to get that.
The youth we see trying so hard to break into a sport that is so demanding and competitive amazes me and make me emotional (in a good way). I hope they learn the most important lesson, loyalty to the ones who showed them the way. It is my hope THEY NEVER forget those that took the time to show them the way.

I decided to put the above as my President's message this month, since it really sums up the weekend of our shows. It was very exciting to have them back in Kansas City, as the outdoor venue that conformation Specialty Shows should be, it is where our breed truly shines and looks the best.
There are so many people to thank who made this possible, I always fear forgetting someone when I do this, and if I do, please know it is not intentional but I really do want to recognize everyone who worked so hard all weekend.
Amy & Troy Edwards, Ken & Iryna Sanders, Ray Laughlin & Sally Hamm for setting up the tents and EZ ups at ring side on Friday evening, then took everything down on Sunday and organized the trailer with Mike & Nancy Kennedy on Sunday after the show. Debbie McHenry & Sally Hamm for transportingour Judges, Charlie & Bobbie Schiffelbein for providing coffee and goodies Saturday and Sunday morning, Betty Johnson & Mike Kennedy for selling catalogs and handing out armband numbers, Linda Given & Amy Edwards for ring stewarding and keeping everything moving in a well- organized timely fashion, Summer Cole for capturing special moments and all the wins on film, and all the extra hands that helped with addtional staking down and holding tents throughout the weekend. Ray Laughlin for picking up the Saturday lunch for everyone. Last but not least, a special THANK YOU to Brad & Marion Baker, who provided an absolutely fabulous dinner Saturday evening. Except for the fried chicken, all home cooked by Brad. It was a huge success and everyone loved it, countless hours of preparation and then a beautiful presentation. Afterwards, while we were all watching the wonderful Police Dog presentation, Rose (Carmi's Mom) cleaned up the entire Shelter House where the dinner was served.
We truly are the little club that could, THANK YOU everyone!!!!!!! this could and would not happen without the help of all our members!
Dog Show Terms
Whether or not you are a fan of dog shows, you may have heard some terms that leave you guessing. Some of them might be easy to figure out but others are not so obvious. Here are some of the terms commonly used in dog shows with explanations of their meanings:
All Rounder describes a dog show judge who is licensed to judge all breeds.
Bait is an object used to get and keep a dog's attention in the show ring, such as a treat or toy. Some shows do not allow bait to be used.
Benched Show (or bench show) refers to a dog show at which dogs are assigned to separate benches when not in the showing ring.
Spectators can approach each bench to learn more about the dog present. The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is one of the few benched shows in the United States.
Bitch is the term used to describe an intact female dog (not spayed).
Breed Standard is a written description of the ideal physical, functional, and temperamental traits of a specific breed. This is the standard against which all dogs of that breed are judged. The breed standard is created and enforced by the parent club for each breed.
Champion (Ch.) is a title for a dog that has earned a certain number of points competing in AKC shows.
Conformation describes the structure and physical traits of a dog and how well they conform to the breed standard. Dog shows are also often called conformation shows.
Dam refers to the mother of a litter of puppies.
Dog is used in the dog show world to describe an intact male canine (not neutered). An intact female canine is called a bitch.
Gait refers to the movement of the dog and may also be called "action." A competing dog's gait is judged when the dogs are running around the ring. This helps to show proper or improper structure and conformation.
Handler describes the person who shows the dog in the ring. This is not always the dog's owner, but a professional handler that is paid to show dogs. An excellent handler is well-paid because a good performance can mean the difference between a win and a loss.
Stack refers to the position a dog stands in while being shown. Certain dog breeds have their own special positions. Most breeds stand so all four paws are aligned.

Cindy Hartman is proud to announce that Mi Jen’s Willa aka Willa received the title of Preferred Open. She earned her title with 4 first place wins. She currently holds a CD and RE titles.

Carmi Swift reported, “My Joy-Foxhaven Power Trip Cole v Hillside-Tanbark” is our jovial "Court Jester!" He has soulful eyes with one goal in his heart, to please his mama "Carmi." He is our "Switzerland" and can be out with any of the girls and puppies. His patience is to be admired, as he will walk away from his favorite toy before standing his ground from a fellow four-legged family sibling. Yet when he needs to defend his family he does not back down. Cole embodies the magnificence of this great breed.

Summer Movie
“Megan Leavey” based on a true story of a Marine’s best friend
The film shows the unbreakable bond between a Marine and her beloved dog of war. Their heartwarming true story behind Megan Leavey's fight to adopt Rex is now being told in the movie 'Megan Leavey,' starring Kate Mara in the lead role. Leavey and her bomb-sniffing K-9 went on more than 100 missions together in Iraq between 2003 and 2006. They both nearly lost their lives while searching for explosives.
