What did you miss?

The May general meeting and “Ice Cream Social,” was a tremendous hit.  Approximately 30 members and friends turned out for the meeting.

Ray and Betty Laughlin provided the ice cream and club members brought their favorite toppings.

While enjoying their ice cream the crowd was entertained with a spontaneous "Dog Show" put on by our own dogs.

The puppies opened the show with a grand appearance.

Next came the girls followed by the boys.

It’s Tick Season and Ticks Can Carry Disease

Submitted by Marion Baker

I don’t know of anyone that enjoys removing ticks from their dog. They are nasty blood-suckers that can cause some serious diseases.

There are many methods of prevention:

  • Spot-on Treatments

  • Oral Medications

  • Shampoos

  • Tick Dips

  • Dietary Tick Preventatives

  • Tick Collars

To reduce the chances that a tick will transmit disease to you or your pets:

  • Check your pets for ticks daily, especially after they spend time outdoors.

  • If you find a tick on your dog, remove it right away.

  • Ask your veterinarian to conduct a tick check at each exam.

  • Talk to your veterinarian about tickborne diseases in your area.

  • Reduce tick habitat in your yard.

  • Talk with your veterinarian about using tick preventives on your pet.

The GSDCGKC welcomes Tina Hoss from Kansas City, Mo and Henry and Cindy McClary from Lake Winnebago, Mo as new members to the club. We are excited to have them as part of our membership. Let’s make them feel welcome. Say hello at our next meeting or event.

FEATURED CLUB MEMBER

Rosmarie v.Fintel, aka Rosi has been a club member for almost 15 years. She is also a member of the American Kennel Club, The Greater KC Dog training club, KC Golden Retriever Club, and the KC Hunting and Retriever Club.

Rosi has served on the board of some of these organizations and is involved in organizing and helping with trials and shows in various venues.

She has been teaching Dog Training classes for the City of Liberty for the past 20 years. The classes are based on the AKC CGC (Canine Good Citizen) program. Rosi is also a registered evaluator.

A voluntary CGC certification test is offered several times a year after the completion of the 6-week Beginner class.

The AKC CGC Responsible Dog Owner’s Pledge is as follows:

  • I will be responsible for my dog’s health needs

  • I will be responsible for my dog’s safety

  • I will not allow my dog to infringe on the rights of others

  • I will be responsible for my dog’s quality of life

The Beginner classes cover behavior issues, house breaking, crate training and basic skills such as taking the dog for a walk, being examined, sit, down, stays, etc.  The classes are for dogs 3 month of age and up and handlers as young as 7 years. Skills needed in everyday life are worked on.

The Advance classes are for owners who would like to continue training and might be interested in showing or doing therapy work.

She has titled her own dogs in Obedience, Tracking, Herding, Hunting and Agility.

Rosi works at the Liberty Hospital as a Registered Nurse.  She looks forward to retiring in 2 years and getting a German Shepherd puppy.  Now that is something to look forward to.
